Night Maple Diptych (Pair of two UNFRAMED 36 x 18" Original Botanical Cyanotypes on Paper)
Night Maple Diptych (Pair of two 36 x 18" Original Botanical Cyanotypes on Paper)
Combined total 36 x 36 inches/ 91 x 91 cm
These two halves of one image can be hung close together on the wall or separately as two tall narrow works. Hung together, they form a square and you can see where the lines of the tree branch continue across the two panels. Each one measures 18 x 36” (45 x 91 cm).
This tree whose deeply dissected leaves each have 9 points is called the Dancing Peacock Japanese Maple, (Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' or 'Maiku-jaku'). You can see how all the long feathery points resemble the fanned out tail of a peacock.
Though they look like block prints or screen prints, these are actually a form of photography called a cyanotype. Every botanical print is entirely unique made using plants and trees from my own garden laid in that exact composition on the hand-coated light-sensitive paper only once. There is no ink, no printing press and no copper plate or wood block.
The tiny brown marks you see in some places are caused by tannins from the tree leaves used. They are essentially tea stains. Trapped in the the heat under glass on a hot day, sometimes the leaves on the branches begin to perspire and their juices leave a mark on the paper.
On 100% cotton acid-free watercolor paper. Ships with both long prints rolled together in one tube.
