Moonlight Eucalyptus (original botanical cyanotype on paper, 24 x 36 inches)

(24” x 36” original cyanotype on cotton watercolor paper)

I love a good walk in the hills under the shade of big trees. These particular eucalyptus branches came from trees by my house in the Oakland hills. Northern California has many eucalyptus, especially in the hills. They grow tall, side by side, swaying together in the wind with their branches hanging down and leaves dangling like tinsel. My botanical cyanotypes are each one-of-a-kind “contact photographs” made outdoors using natural light and real plants and branches. There is no camera lens and there is no etched plate or printing press. I spend a great deal of time planning and arranging the composition of the branches on the photo sensitive paper before exposing the contact photograph to achieve a perfect balance of positive and negative space. I enjoy creating the illusion of a “scene” as if each botanical print were a snapshot or a painting. This oversized cyanotype on heavy watercolor paper measures 24 x 36 inches (60 x 90 cm). Bear in mind that once it is matted and framed, it will occupy at least 30 x 40 inches of wall space.

UNFRAMED. Depictions of works on paper in frames and in situ are just to give a sense of scale and to know how they would look once matted.
