Light through Leaves Square Diptych (two 18 x 18" original botanical cyanotypes on paper, combined 18 x 36 inches/ 45 x 90 cm)

UNFRAMED.

Cyanotypes are a 19th century form of cameraless photography. The one-of-a-kind images are hand printed. These are a pair of two square quadruple-exposure cyanotypes. The dreamlike quality of the ghostly overlapping images comes from re-exposing the images several times one on top of the other.

My botanical cyanotypes are each one-of-a-kind slow cameraless photographs made outdoors using natural light and no film negative. There is no lens and there is no etched plate, ink or printing press. As much time is spent in their composition and timing the separate exposures as goes into the final exposure and rinsing. There is no way to reproduce exactly the same effects even if I keep the same plant cuttings to use in a series before they wilt. There is no carved block nor etched copper plate—only the sun causing the photo chemicals to darken every second that it remains exposed to light.

These two prints each measure 18 x 18 inches. Each of the square prints would look best in a 24 x 24 inch picture frame with a wide mat border of 3-4 inches all around the perimeter. See the last detail photos which are depictions of how the prints would look matted and framed in situ.
