Afternoon Light (Unframed original botanical acrylic painting on stretched canvas, 40 x 30 inches)
(2021. Acrylic, 40 x 30 inches / 100 x 75 cm)
The second painting in this new ‘Light’ series which will have more to come. I am incredibly nearsighted and I am usually sensitive to light and lighting. To me, two of the most beautiful sights are when sunlight is behind objects, either illuminating those that are translucent or transforming them to crisp dark silhouettes rather like a woodcut. I admire the translucence of watercolor and though this is an acrylic painting on canvas, it’s done in very thin sheer layers to let the darker colors of the green and yellow undercoat show through. The translucence of both the under coat and top coat gives the entire picture a warm glow. It’s difficult to capture in a photograph but the lighter color of the air or background is a pure cool white dragged over the green underpainting. The background of this second of the series here is less yellowish than the background or “air” of the first painting ‘Early Morning Light.’ They are identical in size, however.
