The Tallest Pine (18 x 10 in. cyanotype)
(18 x 10 in. cyanotype on paper)
UNFRAMED.
Hand-printed photograph using the 19th century cyanotype process. On heavy 1000% cotton watercolor paper. Signed by the artist on the back. One of 5 prints.
This is a hand-printed photograph using an antique 19th century form of photography. It is a larger version of the same smaller matted print of the same name. This larger version is printed on smooth hot press watercolor paper without any visible texture as the smaller one has.
These are the local Monterey pines on a misty morning in the woods in Northern California where I live. The long narrow format is inspired by the height of the trees and by Asian scroll paintings. Though it is a photo, it is reminiscent of traditional Chinese sumi-e ink paintings of craggy mountains with pines hanging off them. There are times when nature imitates art.
